Larry ?serenity now? Steenkamp, previously from Plettenberg Bay?s Emily Moon, and his wife Sarah, decor enthousiast, recently opened what is regarded as one of the freshest and most inspired eateries in Cape Town. Situated high-up in Vredehoek, a mere stones throw from Deer Park, their rustic venue exudes nostalgia and an irresistible charm.

The outside terrace looks enchanting, as if it was there to witness the arrival of the Dutch ages ago, and has a sophisticated yet organic feel to it. The recycled wooden shutters add some more character, and help on the slightly more windy days. To top it off: on a clear day The Woodlands Eatery is blessed with a view that stretches as far as the eye can see.

On the inside the exterior charm has been carried through effortlessly and effectively. The eclectic décor comprises wood, vintage mirrors and a well styled mish-mash of revamped chairs. Credit for this goes mainly to Sarah.

The owner, almost as modest as he is eccentric, aptly describes himself as a cook, not a chef.

Forget about frothy emulsions and trios of caviar. Although lots of care gets put into the presentation, the focus is on the taste buds, the tummy and the overall experience.

The less is more adage may apply when it comes to the extent of the menu, but does not when it comes to the servings. Larry believes in a limited but varied menu, and uses fresh produce, organic where possible. He caters for a wide public, but does not loose track of the main goal: delivering quality food at a realistic and affordable price.

Both Sarah and her other half believe that the key to creating an enjoyable encounter is the fusion of a great setting, good food, carefully selected music and excellent service. Nobody can satisfy everybody, but their aim is to get it right for as wide a public as possible.

Most of the staff members have followed the owners from Plettenberg Bay, and have worked together as a team for several years. Sarah in addition is ever present on the floor, and will see to it that your every need has been taken care off, where possible.
