Welcome, and thank you for visiting Le Canard?s virtual home. I hope in this introduction to give you a little taste and feel of our unique restaurant, host over many years to good friends, dignitaries, famous folk, and yes, just ordinary people like you and me, who appreciate the finer things in life? excellent food, fine music, soothing décor, acclaimed wines???..and great company.

From an original Sandton homestead to a brothel, to a kitchen showroom and even a casino, guests at Le Canard continue to enjoy the warm and opulent ambience expected of one of South Africa?s most acclaimed and award winning restaurants.

Le Canard ?hatched? in 1987, and although never the proverbial ugly duckling, the venue has been enhanced over the years, ensuring that up to date appointments and décor, (as well as the veggie garden) are all in place to make your dining experience as pleasurable as possible.

Having developed from a base of pure French and German influence, to that of an establishment with a highly sought after International Cuisine, the restaurant has both a proudly South African reputation, as well as an enormous international following.

My staff and I endeavour to ensure that your visit to our fine venue is both pleasant and memorable, and to this end I will share with you my philosophy. Besides being a Restaurateur, I am foremost also a consumer, and in fact, a fairly demanding one. As such, I have certain expectations. Whilst mine are not always fulfilled on my ingredient shopping sprees, I will certainly try to ensure that yours are. I believe that eating-out should be special, and I know that Le Canard is a very special ?eating-out venue? for a number of reasons.

Only the best available ingredients are sourced for our specially researched menu. I have not become confused by the six-month-wonder Fusion Food, or other here today gone tomorrow food fads, however I do recognize that eating patterns are changing constantly! More knowledge and concern for healthier eating is apparent. The breaking down of food barriers is exciting and enjoyable. With this in mind I have added to our classically rich favourites some tantalizing new flavours, and have steered away from the excessive use of heavy creams and butters. Changing some ?heavy? French cuisine to welcome a more health conscious era has been a challenge for me, and hence I have pride in achieving this in a period of ever escalating costs and trying to contain prices ? remembering of course that I am also a consumer! Quality is what we offer every guest, and the timeless truth of ?value-for-money? is important to us, with NO hidden costs and extra charges, as is practised in almost all so-called ?fine?, and other, establishments.

Together with my team ? Messrs. Chet D., Raphael Dube (Maitres d?Hotel), Frans Ditsego and Daniel Masilo (Executive Dining), we collectively offer quality and unparalleled service. Friendly, intelligent and unobtrusive staff who are neat and appropriately dressed will certainly not be giving you a tawdry two minute hiatus of ?Is everything still OK?? which banter certainly should not be considered as service. Personal hospitality lends to making our theatre of dining more complete.

Your dining experience is enhanced by the finest of table appointments, with total comfort, fresh from the market flowers, candlelight, and clean air, with strains of classical music adding to the ambiance.

Of course, the company you choose to share your dining experience with is totally up to you! ? the rest is what we are here to take care of.

We do request, and would greatly appreciate cellular phones being switched off during service. If emergency calls are to be made or received, PLEASE be so kind as to do this outside of the Dining Room.

We may welcome smokers, and in keeping with current Tobacco Regulations we ask those diners who smoke to show due consideration to those who do not. Please do not take offence should we ask you to extinguish your cigarette. Cigars only after 22h30 please, even in the smoking section, when it is available.
